I love the gym in Janaury!  Every January, all the new people arrive and take over all the equipment, fill up all the lockers, and ask a ton of questions. What used to take me an hour to do now takes at least an hour and a half. Mind you, I have built my life around fitness and education. It isn't the fact that the gym is now crowded that bothers me, it's the fact that in February it won't be anymore! Every year it's the same thing....start that New Years resolution on January 1, pack the gym to capacity for the first two weeks, and then completely disappear for the rest of the year.

Here are my ideas on how to keep motivated beyond the month of January:

Today the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services released the "Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2010".

What is this: Every 5 years the government is required by law to review, update, and publish the Dietary Guidelines for Americans. They use recent scientific evidence to help update these guidelines. It has 6 chapters and about 95 pages.

Why is it important:  It has tons of valuable advice for free. It is used for teaching the general public about healthy eating

I'll be blogging about different sections of the guidelines throughout the next month. For now I'll leave you with the Selected Messages for Consumers:

Below was taken from the Dietary Guidelines 2010
Take action of the Dietary Guidelines by making changes in these three areas.
Choose steps that work for you and start today.

Balancing Calories
  • Enjoy your food, but eat less.
  • Avoid oversized portions.

Food to Increase
  • Make half your plate fruits and vegetables.
  • Switch to fat-free or low-fat (1%) milk.

Take a look at your plate the next time you sit down for a meal. What colors do you see? Nutritionists agree that we are lacking color on our plates. See how many in each color category you currently eat and at your next meal, add some new colors.

LIGHT-GREEN/WHITE: Broccoli sprouts, brussel sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, turnips

WHITE: Garlic, leeks, onions, shallots

ORANGE/YELLOW: Apricots, cantaloupe, carrots, mangoes, sweet potatoes, bananas

RED: Sour cherries, pink grapefruit, sweet red peppers, tomatoes, watermelon, strawberries, beets, raspberries

BLUE/PURPLE:  Plums, blackberries, blueberries, red cabbage, eggplant, purple grapes

DARK GREEN: Avocados, broccoli, collard greens, cucumbers, spinach, zucchini

If you haven't heard already, Jack LaLanne died Sunday afternoon at the age of 96. This is very sad to me as he has impacted my life any many others. He was a true trailblazer and into fitness way before it became popular. He is the Grandfather of modern gyms and home fitness. Having opened his own gym way back in 1936, 30 years before Gold's gym. Many people don't know he invented several of the gym machines you use today, such as the leg extension and smith machine. Unfortunately, he didn't patent those ideas and reap all the monetary benefits of all his ideas.

He also was the first to have his own home fitness television show. It started in 1951 and ran for 34 years! I can only imagine how many people he has helped during his career. I've often used him as a example when I'm told by others they are too old to workout. His strength and energy was impressive for someone even it their 20's! I admire the man for practicing what he preached for his whole life. I'd like to note that his death was caused by pneumonia, not cardio vascular disease or cancer. One of his best quotes was "I can't die, it would ruin my reputation!". Well Jack LaLanne I don't think it ruined your reputation... I think some will learn how to live by the memory of you. Thanks for being such a pioneer in the industry.

Below are all his firsts, feats, and honors
