1/3/11 Is your health and fitness New Year’s resolution a good one?

At the end of New Years Eve you counted down to bring in the New Year. 2011 is here! Did you make a resolution? Many people make diet and exercise their top goal. However, studies show about 95% of resolutions doesn’t last. This is obvious every year as the gym becomes packed in January. Only to go back to the normal amount of members by February or March. Does this mean you’re doomed if you make a New Year’s resolution? Not quite. Perhaps a different approach is needed to make it more obtainable. One of the steps taken in my program is to form a S.M.A.R.T. goal. The acronym SMART stands for specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and timely. This narrows your goal down to something more likely to be achieved.

For example this is a typical BAD resolution:
“I want to lose weight”

S.M.A.R.T. resolution:
"I want to lose 10lbs by February 15th”

The above goal is specific: I want to lose weight
Measureable: 10lbs is measurable by a scale
Attainable: It’s possible to lose 10lbs in 6 weeks
Realistic: Are you willing to work out and eat better to lose the 10lbs (if not, than it’s not realistic)
Timely: I gave myself until February 15th

Remember the S.M.A.R.T. plan can be used for any of your New Year’s Resolutions.
